Factory Furniture supplied Flo benches as part of the regeneration development of the High Street, Bromley. As an extension of the scheme, Factory Furniture was commissioned by Studio Egret West to design and supply larger curved versions of the Flo. These were used as feature seats for the large public space.
The Flo bench was designed with contemporary street seating needs in mind; for example, being as inclusive as possible whilst resisting criminal and anti-social behaviour:
– A safer place to sit: the recesses (front and back) allow the public to store bags behind their legs out of reach of opportunistic thieves; while the lack of slots and crevices deters those wishing to stash drugs.
– A cleaner place to sit: there are no crevices or areas where litter can build up; the sinuous shape allows litter, dirt and water to flow off.
– Easy to relocate: the bench needs no anchoring or purpose built foundation
– Deters skaters: the expressed join details and lack of sharp edges mean the bench is difficult to grind on.
The 6 metre seats were manufactured from polished black granite. They were supplied to the High Street at Bromley in four sections to make onsite installation easier.
